benefits Summary

Vacation leave accrues monthly based on years of service: 15 days/year (9.375 hours/month) up to 7 years; increasing to 20 days/year (12.5 hours/month) at 7 years; up to 30 days/year (18.75 hours/month) at 28 years. Employees receive a one-time 37.5-hour vacation credit after their second anniversary. Sick leave accrues at 9.375 hours per month. Designated paid holidays include New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Sovereign's Birthday, Canada Day, Labour Day, National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, Thanksgiving, Remembrance Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, plus one additional local holiday and any national holidays proclaimed by Parliament. Personal leave with pay allows up to 15 hours per fiscal year for personal reasons. Bereavement leave provides up to 7 consecutive calendar days or two periods totaling 5 working days, including travel days, for immediate family deaths, with one day for extended family members. Maternity leave without pay is up to 18 weeks, extendable up to 52 weeks if the newborn is hospitalized, with a maternity allowance supplementing Employment Insurance benefits up to 93% of weekly pay. Parental leave without pay is up to 37 weeks (standard) or 63 weeks (extended), with parental allowance supplements. Leave without pay for family care can be up to 5 years total for long-term care or care of a dying family member. Domestic violence leave provides up to 75 hours per fiscal year with pay. Indigenous employees may receive 15 hours paid and 22.5 hours unpaid leave annually for traditional practices. Other leaves include court attendance, injury-on-duty, personnel selection, and education leave with possible salary allowances. Shift workers receive accommodations for attending proceedings during regular hours. Severance pay is based on weekly pay and years of continuous employment, with up to 30 weeks maximum for death or termination, and varying weeks for layoffs and probation rejections.

compensation Summary

Salaries are structured in levels EC-01 through EC-08 with five incremental steps each. As of June 22, 2021, starting salaries range from $55,567 (EC-01 Step 1) to $122,991 (EC-08 Step 1), increasing annually with scheduled raises effective June 22 of each year through 2025. For example, EC-01 Step 1 increases from $55,567 in 2021 to $62,871 in 2025. Pay increments occur every 12 months, moving employees to the next step in their scale. Overtime is paid at 1.5 times the hourly rate for the first 7.5 hours and double time thereafter on normal workdays; on the first day of rest, 1.5 times for first 7.5 hours and double time after; on second or subsequent days of rest, double time for all hours. Working on designated paid holidays pays 1.5 times for scheduled hours plus double time for hours beyond scheduled hours, plus holiday pay equivalent to 7.5 hours at straight time. Minimum reporting pay is three hours at applicable overtime rate. Standby pay is half an hour at straight time for every four hours or portion thereof on standby. Shift and weekend premiums are $2.25 per hour for hours worked between 4 pm and 8 am and for hours worked on Saturdays and Sundays, respectively.
